You’re my hero! [swoon]

October 28, 2009

Are you reading these words on your cell phone? It’s okay to admit it; most of us are avid users of mobile devices. Mmm, that chic iPhone or that slick Blackberry—they’re hard to resist, no question. Waiting for the bus? Check your email. Just saw a hilarious occurrence on the street? Update your Facebook status. Lost in the city? Google Maps to the rescue! What would life be like without the convenience of mobile computing?

extraordinariesReally think about it: what are we all doing with our heads down, our thumbs lost in texting fury, unaware of our surroundings, entranced by our mobile devices? “Well, it’s modern life,” you say. But if you’re using The Extraordinaires, you’re saving the world, one tap at a time. And that’s why they get our thumbs up today. In their own words:

The Extraordinaries is a micro-volunteering platform, that allows organizations to engage their supporters via micro-actions, done on-demand and on-the-spot using a mobile phone or web browser.

So make those 12 minutes of waiting for public transport productive by tagging or transcribing or translating (and other verbs that don’t begin with the letter t). Learn more about how you can make your iPhone into your hero’s cape. Sooner than you known it, you might be considering investing in some blue tights.

Why do we dig this idea so much? Well, we here at VOO! love the idea of community (we’re trying to foster an engaged, excited, creative online community on our site). Naturally, we’re all for the idea of community involvement in the grander scheme of things. And that’s what you get with The Extraordinaries: a simple way for you to be part of the whole, and it’s fully integrated into your existing mobile lifestyle. You can’t get any cooler.

Unless you’re actually wearing those blue tights, of course.
